Midsummer in Oxford Program

Overview

The Midsummer in Oxford program is designed for serious acting students at all levels and concentrates on Classical Acting especially Shakespeare. The program provides a unique opportunity to work and live with the finest actors and directors backed by the foremost teachers of Voice and Movement making up a faculty drawn primarily from Britain, but also including several of America’s leading practitioners. Based in Oxford at Balliol College the program is ideally located forty miles from Stratford -upon-Avon and fifty miles from London. It is accredited by the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and run in association with UCLA and Yale School of Drama. The program regularly features Britain's leading actors and directors as members of its faculty.

Those who participated recently include John Barton, Saffron Burrows, Simon Callow, Brian Cox, Julian Glover, Henry Goodman, Jeremy Irons, Jane Lapotaire, Katie Mitchell, Alan Rickman, Diana Quick, Fiona Shaw, David Schwimmer and Deborah Warner. Many of the students at the Midsummer in Oxford Program have gone on to achieve great success in the acting profession including David Schwimmer, Oliver Platt, Joe Mydell, Paul Giamatti, Paul Rudd, Melissa Errico, Jennifer Ehle, Gail Grate, Jack Davenport. While the main objective of the Midsummer in Oxford Program is to improve the acting skills of its students it is also to enable them to meet and work with the most distinguished artists from the British theatre whose expertise and experience guarantee a stimulating summer of rare excitement.

Calendar
The Midsummer in Oxford program runs for four weeks every summer during the month of July. In 2008, the program will run from July 4th through August 3rd.

Accommodation

Students live in Balliol College dormitories and each student has a room of his/her own. All weekday meals are provided in the Balliol College dining hall; meals are not provided on weekends.



Student Life

The River Party

BADA's annual River Party, held annually at a Boat House on the Cherwell, is a highlight of the month at Balliol. Students, faculty and staff share drinks and dances as the sun sets against the Oxfordshire countryside.

The Bada Entertainment Evening
Each summer, a BADA Entertainment Evening is held in Balliol Hall. Acts may include songs from popular musicals, piano pieces, juggling, magic acts, comedy routines or anything the students choose to contribute.

Excursion to Sratford-Upon-Avon

Students and faculty make an all-day excursion to Stratford-upon-Avon to see an evening performance by the Royal Shakespeare Company. The cost is included in the tuition fee.

Open Day

The final Saturday of the program is designated an Open Day, during which students will perform scenes on which they have been working. Members of students' families and other guests are welcome to attend.

Program Notes

Program and Class Size

The number of students accepted into the Midsummer in Oxford program is limited and no class on the program will have more than sixteen students.

Daily Schedule
Classes are normally held every weekday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a break for lunch. Wednesdays are devoted to tutorials at which students work one to one with their teachers.

Books
All books are provided without charge by the program, with the exception of a Complete Works of William Shakespeare, which every student must bring with them to Oxford. We recommend the Riverside Shakespeare and any edition must have line numbers.

Students will be notified within four weeks of their audition whether or not they have been accepted. A non-refundable deposit of £250 is payable on acceptance to confirm your place on the course. This is deductible from the tuition fee. All fees are payable in pounds sterling and can be paid by MasterCard/Visa or a cheque in pounds sterling payable to "BADA".

Financial Assistance
Limited financial assistance is available in the form of scholarships. They are awarded in circumstances of financial hardship. Applicants MUST send in a request for a scholarship with the application form. The request must be brief and outline why the applicant will have difficulties in paying full fees. Decisions will only be made after the applicant has auditioned. Please send a request for financial aid along with your application if you wish to be considered for a scholarship. Scholarships are awarded based on merit and financial hardship.

Insurance
Students must make their own arrangements for accident and health insurance. BADA cannot accept any liability for the student's safety, health or welfare.  A student's health form must be completed by all students and counter-signed by a parent / guardian upon acceptance.

Academic Credit

Students who satisfactorily complete the program may apply to the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) for four Advanced Acting credits, provided the student attends a compulsory credit meeting held at Balliol during the program. UCLA charge a registration fee of $300 fee and, currently, a $888 course fee.

UCLA operates on the quarter system and 4 units of the quarter-system credit transfer as 2.67 units for students who attend a college on the semester system. Students who attend a college that is on the quarter system will receive the full 4 units of quarter-system credit. For more information please read the FAQ at http://www.summer.ucla.edu .
