Midsummer Conservatory
Program
Classes
Acting Shakespeare (core subject)
A practical class covering comedy, history and tragedy. Particular attention
will be given to textual analysis and verse speaking.
Theatre and Culture (core subject)
The students see professional productions each week. This class
puts those productions into a cultural and historical perspective, and
discusses their relative successes and failures after the visits.
Modern and Contemporary Playwrights (core
subject)
This is a practical class covering playwrights such as Brecht, Berkoff,
Osborne, McDonagh, Churchill and Pinter.
Movement
The course is directed to general movement exercise involving muscular
co-ordination and control.
Voice
Structured exercises are combined with guided vocal discovery to add
strength, creativity and emotional range to the students' natural voice
Theatre History
Students will be introduced to the rich variety of Britain’s theatrical
heritage and history, and learn to appreciate how this affects the drama
of the present.
Tutorials
Students have one to one tutorials to discuss and practice any work
they want with a professional actor.
Special Guests
A number of Special Guests from British Theatre will give talks and
take workshops during the program.
Excursions
There will be at least one oganised visit to the Theatre each week,
either in Oxford or supervised
Bada Entertainment Evening
Each summer, a BADA Entertainment Evening is held. Acts may include
songs, piano pieces, juggling and magic or comedy acts.
Open Day
At the end of the program on the final Saturday there will be an Open
Day at which students will perform some of their work in progress. Students'
family members and friends are welcome to attend.
Books
All books and excursions are provided without extra charge.
Accommodation and Meals
Accommodation is provided in rooms in Balliol’s post-graduate
halls of residence, Jowett Walk, where teaching rooms are also located.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided during the week.
BADA runs a strict No Alcohol policy on this program.
No participant, regardless of age will be allowed to drink alcohol while
attending the program.
